Tamiya 1:72 Grumman F-14D Tomcat takes flight
Tamiya has announced its latest aircraft kit, the 1:72 scale Grumman F-14D Tomcat. The first review sample is already in transit from Japan to the United Kingdom for Tamiya Model Magazine, where a full build feature will be published once assembly is complete.
The new tooling represents a detailed and flexible take on the famous twin-seat naval fighter, featuring interchangeable and movable parts for multiple display configurations. Builders can choose to depict the sealing plates and air bags with the wings in different positions, capturing the Tomcat’s variable-geometry wing system in miniature.
The canopy, fuselage sides, and air intake sections are produced using slide-moulding technology, ensuring sharp definition across the model’s contours. Horizontal stabilisers are movable thanks to poly caps, while optional parts allow the fuel probe and boarding ladder to be shown either open or closed. The weapons suite includes laser-guided bombs, a LANTIRN targeting pod, and air-to-air missiles, reflecting the Tomcat’s late-service strike capabilities.
Two seated crew figures are provided, along with five US Navy marking options. Additional cockpit detail, optional open panels, and surface engraving contribute to the authenticity of the build.
